Tips

An asphalt/tarmac driveway is comprised of petroleum products and can be damaged by fluids from your car. The best time to clean a liquid stain is as soon as it occurs.

Cat litter or baking soda can be used to absorb the liquid. The litter should be left overnight and swept up with a broom. Motor oil, transmission fluid and brake fluid are hazardous substances and must be disposed of properly. Once the liquid portion is removed, any remaining stain can be cleaned by scrubbing with detergent and bleach or a driveway cleaner. When purchasing driveway cleaners, always use cleansers formulated for asphalt since some solvents can damage it. Wear protective safety glasses and rubber gloves whenever handling chemicals. Pressure washing is not recommended for asphalt because it can set the stain more deeply into the material.
