Cleaning your Decking,  Walls and Brick Work.

We know that over the time the surface of bricks and timber decks becomes exposed to the elements such as sunlight, rain, snow and frost. This will inevitably lead to a deterioration of the colour if nothing else. Like most things outside, wooden decks and brick work will respond to a maintenance schedule that involves cleaning and supplemental treatment. Discolouration is the obvious problem – all un-stained timber outside eventually turns a grey colour. Protective action can help to allay this problem, which is caused in the main by fine dirt particles entering the microscopic ‘pores’ of the timber.  Decks need periodic attention to keep them looking good.  The timber itself loses colour as ultra violet rays from the sun react with the timber. In this case, simply cleaning your deck will not restore the original colour. Though it will make it more attractive!

A jet washer can be used for cleaning decks  BUT it must not be a heavy duty one. Something smaller than 1500 psi with a wide fan jet will be suitable for most deck cleaning and fence jobs or. Anything more powerful will leave the timber with a ‘wooly’ finish, as it will destroy the wood fibres. The result will be a deck or fence that is very difficult – if not impossible – to clean or to treat. We can even give your garden furniture a new lease of life.

Washing brick walls

As a surface exposed to the exterior, brick walls are vulnerable to outside elements including sun, rain, snow, mold, mildew, algae, smoke, bird droppings, sand and dust. If these are left to sit on the surface over long periods of time they will not only make such structures old and unsightly, but they will also cause material erosion. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to remove such debris. Pressure washers are used to eliminate water stains, salt spots, mold, mildew, dirt, wasp nests, and debris left after construction (construction cleaning).

Often times when brick and concrete are involved, the rules change. we know to use low pressure when washing brick. as brick companies state that around 500-1000 PSI should be sufficient enough to clean them and they also insist to never go over 1500 PSI. If you just blast the brick wall with 5000 PSI you will scar up the bricks and cause a lot of damage. This is the major reason why brick cleaning jobs should be left to professionals. The majority of brick are easy to clean. It is when you start getting into the sand faced brick than you have problems. The sandy surface actually gives a different kind of color than the color underneath. If you use too much pressure then the sandy finish comes off and you are left with a different color. Improper brick cleaning and pressure washing will turn red colored brick into orange-ish. Other brick soak up lots of water and are called sponge brick. What is bad about sponge brick is that no matter how much you wet down the wall you cannot keep water on the surface. In order to get the cleaning solutions to work properly they cannot be allowed to soak into the brick, they must stay on the surface. Learning how to clean brick properly is very important otherwise you could damage it.
